Ideas for an Unforgettable Winter Wedding

Weddings need not only take place during the warmer months. In fact, winter with its darker misty days, sculptural leafless trees and cooler temperatures can make for the most gorgeously romantic weddings. Something as simple as a different season can provide your wedding with a point of difference to make it truly unforgettable to your guests.

Whether you are at the business end of planning a winter wedding, or are perhaps a year away from saying “I do”, be sure to take into consideration our tips and ideas for a winter wedding with the wow factor. Embrace darker days and the sun going down early with masses of romantic lighting incorporated into your styling.

Think an abundance of thick pillar candles of various heights and sizes massed at the alter or down the length of your dining tables, or strand upon strand or twinkling fairy lights overhead. The gloomier weather and early dusk also makes for the most wonderfully moody photographs.

The last thing you want is for your guests to associate your wedding with being cold and wet. Incorporate deliciously thick throws and blankets into your styling, ensure the venue provides plenty of heating both indoors and outdoors, and provide umbrellas to match your theme in case of wet weather.

Guests will certainly be bringing coats with them, so work with your venue in ensuring there is a manned cloakroom for guests to leave their belongings on arrival to save them lugging bulky clothing around with them. Consider warming welcome drinks such as mulled wine, warm apple cider or wintery cocktails for your guests to sip at on arrival.

Style drink dispensers amongst raw timber, clusters of fruit and cinnamon sticks, and lush leafy foliage. If you’d like to provide your guests with a wedding favour or bonbonniere, consider theming it around the time of year. This could include sweet containers of coffee beans or hot chocolate powder, little bottles of belly-warming Baileys or Scotch, or miniature wintery pot plants such as cyclamens or pansies wrapped in bark. Winter doesn’t have to mean snowflakes and crystals, but it is a great idea to embrace the season and reflect it in your styling.

Lay shimmering silver sequinned tablecloths down the length of your dining tables, style luxurious faux fur throws and cushions on cosy comfortable sofas, and if a silvery white theme is not your thing, consider a deliciously warm palette of plum, burgundy and burnt orange combined with timber and lush leafy evergreens. You can never have too many candles add the finishing touches to your styling and to create romantic ambience.

It’s true, flowers aren’t as readily available in winter than during the rest of the year, but some of our favourites also bloom during the cooler months.

Consider gorgeous tulips, hellebores, blushing bride and jonquils in the depths of winter, and ranunculus, anemones and japonica blossom towards the end of the season. And of course there are the blooms that grace us with their presence yearlong such as roses, freesias and orchids. Large vases of leafless branches, raw timber and naked vines which reflect the current climate are also worth considering.

Choosing flowers that are in season locally helps keep costs down, but if you have your heart set on peonies for example, chances are we can import them if they are in season elsewhere in the world.
