The Origins of Mother’s Day
While honouring mothers has roots in many ancient cultures, the Mother’s Day we know today actually has quite modern beginnings. The official holiday started in the United States in the early 1900s, thanks to a woman named Anna Jarvis.
Anna wanted to create a special day to honour her own mother, who had spent her life advocating for better health conditions for mothers and families. In 1908, she held the first Mother’s Day celebration in West Virginia. The idea quickly caught on, and by 1914, it was declared an official holiday in the US. Not long after, the tradition made its way to Australia, where we’ve been celebrating our mums every second Sunday in May ever since!
Why Flowers Became the Go-To Gift
Flowers have been associated with love, care, and appreciation for centuries, making them the perfect way to express heartfelt emotions. But flowers specifically became tied to Mother’s Day thanks to Anna Jarvis herself.
At the very first Mother’s Day services, Anna handed out her mother’s favourite flower -white carnations - to attendees. Carnations symbolised purity, sweetness, and a mother's unconditional love, and from there, the tradition of giving flowers to mums blossomed.
Over time, the flower choices expanded far beyond carnations. Today, popular Mother’s Day blooms include:
