Chinese Valentine’s Day: Qixi, A Love Story Written in Roses
In China, the most romantic day of the year isn’t February 14th - it’s Qixi Festival (七夕), also known as Chinese Valentine’s Day. Falling on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month - this year on Friday, August 29, 2025 - Qixi is a poetic celebration of love, rooted in mythology, and expressed through beauty, emotion, and, of course, flowers.
The Legend of Qixi Festival
The origins of Qixi Festival lie in a timeless love story between Zhīnǚ (the weaver girl, a celestial being) and Niúláng (the cowherd, a mortal). Forbidden to be together, the two lovers were banished to opposite sides of the Milky Way. But once a year, on Qixi, a bridge of magpies forms in the sky - allowing them to reunite for one magical night.
This bittersweet tale has inspired centuries of romantic gestures, and today, Qixi is celebrated much like Western Valentine’s Day: with heartfelt notes, meaningful gifts, and stunning bouquets that symbolise enduring love.
The Meaning Behind Roses for Qixi
Just as with Valentine’s Day, roses remain the most powerful floral symbol of Qixi Festival. But the number of roses matters deeply in Chinese culture. Every quantity tells a different story:
- 1 rose – You are the one
- 11 roses – You’re my one true love
- 99 roses – I’ll love you forever
- 520 roses – I love you (phonetically sounds like "wǒ ài nǐ" in Mandarin)
Did you know: In Chinese slang, 521 can mean "I love you, too" - a cute variation of 520, also pronounced similarly. Together, 520 and 521 have become popular ways to express love digitally or with flowers.
A Modern Romantic Gesture: The 520 Rose Heart
In modern Chinese romance, 520 roses have become the ultimate declaration of love. The number 520 is pronounced similarly to "I love you" in Mandarin, making it a deeply symbolic and emotional gift.
To honour this tradition, we’ve created the Eternal Love – 520 Roses - a breathtaking heart-shaped floral sculpture handcrafted from 520 premium red roses. Bold, luxurious, and unforgettable, it’s the pinnacle of romantic expression for Chinese Valentine’s Day.
